This article provides general collector and workshop context. For use, legality, conservation or purchase decisions, seek advice appropriate to your location and experience.
Control the environment
Avoid damp storage, rapid temperature changes and prolonged contact with materials that can retain moisture around the blade.
Inspect more frequently
In humid conditions, shorten the interval between visual inspections. Pay attention to fingerprints, condensation and the area near the habaki.
Use a thin oil film
After careful cleaning, apply only a light, even film of suitable neutral oil. Excess oil can migrate into the saya and collect debris.
Respond early
If corrosion appears, stop handling the blade and seek appropriate conservation guidance before attempting abrasive correction.
